Why does linear guides rust?

Linear guides are an important part of a variety of applications, from industrial automation to consumer electronics. These mechanical systems ensure smooth and precise linear motion, improving overall efficiency. However, like any other metal component, linear guides are prone to rust if not properly maintained. We will use PYG 20 years of professional experience in guideway to explore the root cause of linear guideway rust, and provide effective prevention methods.

First of all, we need to know the cause of rail rust

 1. Exposure to moisture and humidity:

Moisture is one of the main causes of linear guide rust. If the linear guide is exposed to high humidity or in contact with liquids, such as water or oil, the metal surface may begin to corrode. Therefore, linear guides installed in outdoor or humid environments are particularly prone to rust.

 2. Lack of lubrication:

Proper lubrication is critical to maintaining smooth and friction-free motion of linear guides. Lubricants act as a protective barrier, preventing direct contact between metal surfaces and minimizing the risk of rust. Inadequate or irregular lubrication can cause wear and eventually rust.

 3. Environmental factors:

Harsh environmental conditions, such as extreme temperatures, pollution and chemical exposure, can accelerate the formation of rust on linear guides. If the metal surface of the rail reacts chemically with the surrounding environment, oxidation and corrosion will occur. Prevention method:

 1. Regular cleaning and maintenance:

Clean the linear guide regularly with a non-abrasive cleaner to remove dirt or dust particles. After cleaning, brush on the appropriate amount of lubricating oil to ensure the best performance of the guide rail and prevent rust. And remember to carry out regular maintenance inspections to prevent any signs of rust or wear and treat them promptly.

2. Enhanced sealing:

To protect linear guides from moisture and air, consider linear guides with enhanced sealing. These seals protect internal components from water and minimize the risk of rust.

3. Environmental control: Where feasible, it is recommended that linear guides be installed in a controlled environment or that measures be taken to minimize exposure to harsh conditions. Reduce the chance of corrosion and rust in temperature and humidity control systems.

In general, linear guide rust is a common problem that affects its function and service life. By understanding the root causes and taking preventive measures, you can reduce the risk of rust and ensure smooth linear movement for a variety of applications. Regular maintenance, proper lubrication and environmental control are key factors in extending the life of linear guides and maintaining their peak performance. I hope our guidance will help everyone who uses linear guides
